A Treatise on the Theory of Invariants by Oliver E. Glenn
About this book :-
This text is a foundational work in classical invariant theory. It presents a clear and systematic introduction to the subject, covering symbolic and non-symbolic methods, fundamental theorems like Gordan’s, and applications to binary and ternary forms. Drawing from lectures at the University of Pennsylvania, Glenn’s book balances rigor with accessibility, making it valuable for both historians of mathematics and advanced algebra students. Though the notation is classical, the work remains a significant reference in the development of invariant theory.
The object of this book is, first, to present in a volume of medium size the fundamental principles and processes and a few of the multitudinous applications of invariant theory, with emphasis upon both the nonsymbolical and the symbolical method. Secondly, opportunity has been taken to emphasize a logical development of this theory as a whole, and to amalgamate methods of English mathematicians of the latter part of the nineteenth century Boole, Cayley, Sylvester, and their contemporaries and methods of the continental school, associated with the names of A ronhold, Clebsch, Gordan, and Hermite. The book is a valuable resource for mathematicians and students interested in the principles and applications of invariants, offering a theoretical foundation and practical insights. Glenn's treatise stands as a testament to the author's expertise and contributes to the understanding of a fundamental concept in algebra and its various branches.

The author
Oliver Edmunds Glenn
(1878 – 1959) was an American mathematician and Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He was known because of his work on finite groups and invariant theory. He received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1905. Glenn began his career instructing mathematics at Indiana University in 1902 and subsequently taught at Drury College (Missouri). He joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1906 where he became a full professor in 1914 and retired in 1930. He was an Invited Speaker of the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1924 at Toronto, in 1928 at Bologna, and in 1932 at Zurich.
