After the invention of calculus (differential and integral calculus), the calculus of variations was developed. The calculus of variations has a long history of interaction with geometry and differential equations as will as with physics. The calculus of variations has found applications in other fields such as economics, practical mechanics and electrical engineering. Johann Bernoulli, Leibniz, Newton, Jacob Bernoulli and l'Hopital considered as the starting point of the calculus of variations.

Calculus of variations (or variational calculus) is a branch of mathematical analysis concerned with the problem of finding a function for which the value of a certain integral is either the largest or the smallest possible. In regular calculus we study at small changes in the input of a function and in calculus variation we study at small changes in an entire function, which is the input for functional. It is study of maximum and minimum of certain class of functions. Classical solutions to minimization problems in the calculus of variations are prescribed by boundary value problems involving certain types of differential equations, known as the associated Euler–Lagrange equations. The mathematical techniques that have been developed to handle such optimization problems are fundamental in many areas of mathematics, physics, engineering, and other applications.

Lectures on the Calculus of Variations by Harris Hancock
This book is a comprehensive guide to the calculus of variations, with a focus on the Weierstrassian theory. The calculus of variations is a branch of mathematics that deals with finding the optimal solution to a functional problem. The book covers t . . . READ MORE

Lectures on the Calculus of Variations by Oskar Bolza
The text addresses basic problems with sufficient generality and rigor to offer a sound introduction for serious study. It provides clear definitions of the fundamental concepts, sharp formulations of the problems, and rigorous demonstrations of thei . . . READ MORE

Variational Analysis by R. Tyrrell Rockafellar, Roger J-B Wets
From its origins in the minimization of integral functionals, the notion of variations has evolved greatly in connection with applications in optimization, equilibrium, and control. This book develops a unified framework and provides a detailed expos . . . READ MORE

A History of the Progress of the Calculus of Variations during the Nineteenth Century by Isaac Todhunter
The book traces the progress of the Calculus of Variations during the nineteenth century: Lagrange and and Lacroix, Dirksen and Ohm, Gauss, Poisson, Ostrogradsky, Delaunay, Sarrus, Cauchy, Legendre, Brunacci, and Jacobi. . . . READ MORE

Differential Equations And The Calculus Of Variations
This book is a modern introduction to the calculus of variations and certain of its ramifications. It is based on a course of lectures which the author delivered for a number of years at the Physics Department of the Lomonosov State University of Mo . . . READ MORE

New Variational Methods In Flight Dynamics, V Krotov
This text deals with variational methods for the optimization of motion of aircraft and other objects often encountered in modern technology. The development of aeronautics and astronautics progres sively focuses ever increasing attention on the de . . . READ MORE

The Topology Of The Calculus Of Variations In The Large
This text investigate the homological properties of functional spaces in connection with the estimation of the number of solutions of the corresponding variational problems. These properties are closely related, on the one hand, to previous work of . . . READ MORE

Variable Order Fractional Variational Calculus
This text introduce three types of partial fractional operators of variable order. An integration by parts formula for partial fractional integrals of variable order and an extension of Green’s theorem are proved. These results allow us to obtain a . . . READ MORE

Generalized Fractional Calculus Variations, Odzijewicz
In this thesis we introduce a generalized fractional calculus of variations. We consider variational problems containing generalized fractional integrals and derivatives and study them using standard (indirect) and direct methods. In particular, we . . . READ MORE
