Elements of Plane Trigonometry by Hugh Blackburn - Free PDF
About this book :-
"Elements of Plane Trigonometry" by "Hugh Blackburn" is a classic textbook designed to introduce students to "plane trigonometry" with clarity and structure. First published in 1871, the book was aimed at junior students at the University of Glasgow, helping them transition smoothly from "Euclidean geometry" to the study of trigonometric concepts. Blackburn’s writing emphasizes clear explanations, step-by-step progression, and practical examples, making it easier for learners to grasp the foundations of trigonometry.
The book covers essential topics such as the relationships between angles and sides in triangles, trigonometric ratios, logarithms, and practical applications like surveying and astronomy. Each chapter builds on the previous one, reinforcing concepts and gradually introducing more complex ideas. Blackburn’s structured approach ensures that students develop a strong understanding of "trigonometric principles", which are not only vital in mathematics but also in physics, engineering, and other applied sciences.
Even though the book was published over a century ago, its pedagogical value remains significant. Modern reprints and editions keep Blackburn’s work accessible for new generations of learners who seek a traditional, methodical approach to learning trigonometry. The book continues to serve as a reliable resource for building a solid foundation in "plane trigonometry", blending theoretical understanding with practical applications.
It is analized that the formulae for the sine and cosine of the sum of two angles treated as examples of the elementary theory of projection. Having learned thus much the student has gained a knowledge of trigonometry as originally understood, and may apply his knowledge in surveying; and he has also reached a point from which he may advance into analytical trigonometry and its use in natural philosophy.

About Author :-
The author
Bailie Hugh Blackburn
(1823–1909) was a renowned "Scottish mathematician" and professor at the University of Glasgow. He played a key role in advancing "mathematical education" in Scotland and was known for his close association with William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin. Blackburn studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and made contributions to both theory and practical mathematics, including inventing the Blackburn pendulum. He authored influential "trigonometry texts" like "Elements of Plane Trigonometry" and "A Treatise on Trigonometry", designed to help students transition from Euclidean geometry to analytical methods.
